Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you spell woman/women as “womxn"?
Language matters. By its very nature, “women” disallows for a space separate from men and suggests that wo-men are merely an extension of men. In fact, it makes it so that womxn literally cannot be separate from men. “Womxn” creates a space where something new may be manifested. Rather than referring to “those born with vaginas,” it is more inclusive and allows for all who identify with or as womxn in important ways--the “X” representing mystery, a place for creation, an openness to that which has previously been foreclosed by its very name.
Do you work only with womxn?
Not at all. In fact, if you are asking this question, I encourage you to explore more fully the website to identify how this question in itself is an example of the way our culture and social world have so completely structured how we think of “feminine” and “masculine.” I work with people of all gender identifications and maintain a fluid conception of gender and sexuality.
How do I make an appointment?
To begin, please simply fill out the introductory form by clicking the button below. I will then contact you to set up your free phone consultation. If we decide to work together, I will provide you all of the necessary information for my office address (if meeting in-person) or for your online client portal (for telepsychology).. We will schedule your initial in-depth consultation during your phone session. If you are a telepsychology client, you can schedule future appointments, make payments, send private emails and messages, and meet me for your weekly session--all from your private client portal.
Increasingly, life is moving us around more and more and weekly appointments in person are more difficult to navigate. My personal approach to therapy does not require that we meet in person as the work being done is work you are doing. I am facilitating your work, but as long as you are speaking to me (as someone listening to the unconscious), this need not be in person. In many ways, the computer (or phone) functions much as the Freudian couch, allowing one to sit back and free associate--one of the focal points of Embodied Analysis. In such free associations, something new may arise. Telepsychology allows a greater number of people to access psychological services without any loss in therapeutic benefit. The commitment to the work is what remains important, not the delivery method. What is important for transformation to occur is not that two people be in the same room together, but rather that one speaks aloud to another anything and everything, particularly those things that seem silly, boring, difficult, strange, and out of character. Physical presence is not the transformative factor--speech to another is.
What all can I do through my personal client portal?
I use WeCounsel as my virtual office. It allows you to have video sessions with me, keep a private journal, send journal entries to me if you would like, securely chat with me, share documents and photos, send all client forms, make payments, and schedule appointments. There is also a whiteboard feature that allows us to write and look at photos together during our video conferencing sessions. I can share articles with you during our sessions as well as links to websites I think you would find helpful. WeCounsel is user friendly, and once you have logged into your client portal once, you will find it very intuitive and easy to navigate.
Do I need anything special on my computer to connect with you through WeCounsel?
WeCounsel works best with Chrome and Firefox browsers. In terms of speed of connection--if you can watch a movie over the internet, then your connection is fast enough to use WeCounsel.
Can I use my mobile device for my session?
Absolutely. It may not always be possible to be near your computer for our session. To ensure continuity of care, you can find a quiet place and connect with me through your mobile device. For the best possible video experience, make sure the device is connected to Wi-Fi instead of your phone plan’s internet connection. Make sure that the connection is strong. For some devices, you may need to download the Vidyo app.
In order to use your iPhone or iPad for your scheduled video session, you will need to first download the VidyoMobile app. For iPhone download here. You DO NOT need to open the application once it’s been installed. Close your playstore and navigate to your internet browser. Once you have downloaded the app, go to www.wecounsel.com in your phone’s internet browser, login using your account credentials, and Check In into the scheduled session. Start the session as normal by clicking the Start Session button. It should then direct you to the VidyoMobile app where you will be guided to view the license agreement, and “Accept” its terms. Once you have accepted these terms, you will be sent to the video conference automatically in the VidyoMobile app.
For Android devices, all you must do is navigate to the www.wecounsel.com using the Chrome browser. The Chrome browser comes standard on most Android devices. No plugin is required to perform this action. Start your session as normal.
What about confidentiality in my sessions? How does this work online?
What you discuss in your sessions is completely confidential, with the exception of a few rare instances. As a mandated reporter, I am required by law to notify the appropriate authorities if:
- I believe that you have serious plans to kill or physically harm another person who can be identified
- I believe that you have serious plans to take action in ending your own life, or
- I am made aware of abuse towards a child or an elder, either in your care or in the care of someone else
To ensure your confidentiality for telepsychology sessions, I use the most up-to-date HIPAA-compliant video conferencing software as well as practice management system. This means that all of our communications are protected and confidential. All transactions occur through your personal client portal.
Do you take insurance?
I do not take insurance, though I can provide you with receipts to submit to your insurance company in the case that they do reimburse for out-of-network providers. Click below for more on my rates.
What is your cancellation policy?
To the best of your ability, I encourage you to make your weekly sessions, even if you would prefer to skip that week. Oftentimes, we most want to miss sessions when something we do not quite want to face is beginning to arise. This is when session is particularly needed. That being said, life also happens and requires flexibility. If you need to reschedule your session, I require at least 24 hours cancellation notice; otherwise, you will be charged the full cost for your session.
What do I do in an emergency?
If you are in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, a free, 24-hour hotline at 1.800.273.8255. If your issue is an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
